Irene.

15307110 BG4 Irene.

This picture shows, as of now, the predicted pathway of Hurricane Irene.  Although Charleston shouldn’t be right in the middle of it, its predicted that we will be receiving the effects of it Saturday morning.   It’s the first time we’ve had to track a hurricane since living here, and I don’t like it at all.

We are supposed to be going to DC this weekend because Jon has a research conference meeting and I wanted to tag along, but this storm is complicating things a bit.  It might just be a bad storm, but it also could be something where we would have to worry about not just the winds, but our house and/or car would likely flood.  Charleston is below sea level, and since the town is so old, it also doesn’t have a very good drainage system.  Our parking lot has a drain into some swamplands behind our condos, but if sea level rises, the water could really get backed up. In which case, our car would probably float away, and our house could be in danger.  We are on the first floor, but are 4 or 5 feet off the ground so our house has some protection but not much. It freaks me out especially because our insurance only covers the bare bones of our house, not our stuff.

We also have Adio to worry about.  If we are gone for just a weekend, we usually just leave her all alone with enough food set out for the two days.  If we are in DC, and Irene decides last minute to turn inland, Adio would be in real danger.  We might have to come up with a plan where a friend could swing by and pick her up, but I’d feel really bad asking someone to go out of there way during an evacuation. I’d rather Irene just leave us alone.

For now, we’re just going to keep watching the news and hope for the best.  Honestly,  everyone’s been saying that we will only be on the outskirts of the hurricane and probably just experience a bad storm.  I think I might be scaring you all with my own fears.  I don’t mean to, but I keep seeing pictures like the one above and having personal melt downs.

But really, we have all sorts of emergency bags just in case, and worst case scenario we could just drive out of here with all of our important belongings, and of course Adio on Friday before the storm comes. We’re tough. We’ll be fine.

Anyway.

I’ve had the last two weeks off and its been heaven.  I really haven’t done anything other than hangout with friends, “spring” clean, and go out to the beach or lay by our pool.  It’s been amazing.  Jon and I took a bunch of pics at the beach yesterday that I will post soon. I can’t believe I have to start another semester tomorrow! And this one will be 3 months instead of 2!! Aaaah. I’m not ready to be in class 26 hours a week, and on top of that, all of the studying!

At least I know all my hard work will pay off.  I complain about school, but I really can’t wait to be an OT!

Noooooo! Hurricane’s (and earthquakes) suck. I really hope that it doesn’t mess up the plans for the weekend.
