Family at Hominy Grill and Angel Oak.
Whenever we have family in town we love to go out to eat and show off Charleston’s fine southern cuisine. When Grant and Julie said that they wanted some good southern food we knew just the place.
Hominy Grill! Yay! We hadn’t eaten there in sooo long. So long in fact, that they had a brand new addition in the back we had never even seen before! Hominy is now twice the size! We need to start eating there more than just when family is in town especially because I also remembered that night how much I love their food.
The whole fam-damily. Well, all of the ones in Charleston.
Boiled peanuts. Similar to edamame, but not at the same time. I’d say boiled peanuts are better.
We played tic-tac-toe while we waited for our food….
and took pictures
and sassed each other.
Then the food came and we were all in southern goodness heaven.
Catfish with okra.
Shrimp and grits.
Tomato pudding that puts tomato soup to shame. Serious.
For dessert we shared a hodge podge of pecan pie, chocolate cake with vanilla bean icing, banana and chocolate pudding! Oh my goodness the chocolate pudding was to die for! Rich and dark and delicious! I keep thinking up ways to sneak over there to pick up some more.
After dinner we went to the Battery to let the kids play on some cannons from the civil war because cannons = fun.
On Wednesday night we took everyone to see the Angel Oak Tree, the oldest tree this side of the Mississipi! We try to take everyone out to Angel Oak when they visit because it’s amazing! And it’s free. AND it’s way more awesome in person than you can see in these pictures.
Awkward. The park was closed. I’ve done this to soooo many visitors. It’s pretty much a tradition now that I take family to see the Angel Oak only when its closed. Oh well. Luckily you can still see it from outside the chain link fence. Phew!
Then we went out to eat at Boulevard Diner and ate the best fried chicken and fried green tomatoes and pickles ever. Boulevard is the best because its never crowded, the prices are fair, and the portions are huge! I always have leftovers for lunch the next day.
Nom nom nom.
